Orla Reynolds is an Irish product designer who has graduated from Dublin Institute of Technology with a degree in Interior and Furniture Design. Profiled as one of “Things Modenus Loves,” her first collection of furniture has been well received for its appearance and functionality.
Reynolds’ aptly named “As if from nowhere” line of furniture includes tables and chairs which disappear into the folds of a bookcase. The bookcase can be arranged in a variety of ways as it is made up of independent units of 2-4 shelves, each of which contain a piece of hidden furniture. When all the furniture is in the bookshelf, it has the effect of a subtle but colorful and contemporary white shelving system with accents of color.
Two small tables included in the collection can be pulled out and combined to create one large table which can accommodate all four chairs. The result is a striking space-saving design that allows for flexibility that undoubtedly will be a hit with urban dwellers who will be able to literally pull their dining room out of a wall, as if from nowhere.
In an interview with Dezeen Reynolds explains that her experience working in ballet was a major source of inspiration in her design. “I thought about how a production is brought together for the audience; how the audience becomes engaged. I then began to think about the home as a stage.”
This notion that living space must constantly change with the demands of its audience, or occupants, is reflected in her furniture designs that encourage flexible spaces and consolidated functions. We expect to see more great work from the up-and-coming studio of Orla Reynolds and wish her the best of luck in her already flourishing design career.
