Since the public generally does not get to see where Oscar hosts and honorees rehearse and celebrate backstage on Awards night, we’ve got a preview for you! For the eighth year in a row, Architectural Digest assigns an interior designer to build a dazzling, comfortable Greenroom at the Kodak Theater.
Architectural Digest has awarded the honor of designing this room to designer Roger Thomas who will be in charge of creating the design of the Architectural Digest Greenroom.
This is the eighth consecutive year that Architectural Digest will produce the exclusive backstage lounge for the Oscar® presenters and honorees, and this year the design will will come alive backstage with the sparkle and romance of legendary Hollywood. The guests will be able to relax, rehearse and revel, Golden Era-style.
Thomas celebrates a time when developments in sound, color, genre and dialogue heightened the cinema experience. He amplifies a black and white room with varying shades in between—platinum, blonde and silver—and creates light and movement with reflective materials such as glass objects, metal occasional tables and mirrored walls that were popular interior design elements of the period.
“My fondest memories are cinematic moments,” said Thomas. “The films have as much to do with set design as they do the action.” The focal point of this year’s Architectural Digest Greenroom will be a paint-splattered floor, inspired by the scenic departments of Hollywood studio lots. Christopher Peacock’s exquisite paint collection is used “to keep the room active and interesting,” said Thomas.
The color swatches include Camouflage, Stick, Darby, Bricks, Medium Brown and Drab. “The floor will have a polished black base,” said Thomas. “It is a contemporary version of those that Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers would glide across in the 1930s.” The 1,029 square foot Greenroom will feature French furnishings and decorative accessories by Roche Bobois, adding 1930s hues and flair; decorative Afghan rugs by Amadi Carpets to soften the acoustics; durable yet sophisticated fabrics from Sunbrella’s “Luminous” satin weave collection in the main room and linen textures in the new garden area where Restoration Hardware debuts pieces from its outdoor Klismos Cast Aluminum furniture collection. This “outdoor” space will feature a scrim ceiling with birds on sky blue flying overhead, hedges and antique planters. Four chairs and one daybed receive special attention from Thomas in preparation for Oscar® night. He will hand paint the natural muslin upholstery with freestyle whirls and curves for one-of-a-kind pieces.
